How I Created This Volume 3 Final Cover Low

The Front and back covers for the upcoming How I Created This—Vol 3

After producing 3 volumes of this project, How I Created This, I was thinking about how I could come out with a 4th edition and still make it appealing to photographers. Well, I think I have the solution. Volume 4 is going to be the "Story Edition".

You will be able to buy a minimum number of 4 pages and the layout will be based on the number of images and copy you provide. If you wish to add additional pages, you may do so in sets of 2.

Your images should reflect a theme, a story, or an actual event. We are not looking for random images but a cohesive set which will both spark interest for the reader and be visually beautiful on the page. I will continue to use the square format for the book which has proven to be popular.

You may submit up to 9 images for each page of the book in which case they would be reproduced in the square format (see sample layouts below). At least one "hero" image will be used as a full page bleed. Your copy (around between 250 & 270 words) will appear on a full page. If you would like to write more we will allocate an extra page for it. You decide.

The upload deadline for your stories will be (13 December, 2020) and they will be curated into a book called How I Created This—Volume 4: The Story Edition.

Once the book is completed you will each receive a copy at no extra expense (except for the shipping).

You may upload as many images as necessary to tell your story. You will do this via the link below (or by using a service such as Hightail, WeTransfer or Dropbox) once you have paid the Image Submission Fee. Before uploading your images, please add your initials in front of the file name ie, JW_myfile.JPG.

IMPORTANT: Please include the RAW files for the corresponding images. These will be used to correct any potential quality/color issues that may arise.

IMPORTANT: Please check your images for sharpness, focus and camera shake. View them on your computer at at least 100% to determine the quality. If they are not sharp they will be rejected and I will request an alternate.

Please do not submit HDR images unless they do not look 100% natural.

Your fee buys you 4 pages in the book to be used any way you want. You may also add additional pages in sets of 2 (see the fee structure when you go to submit.

The images should be saved as high resolution JPG files (saved at image quality 12) with the AdobeRGB1998 color profile applied, and with the long side dimension of at least 4800pixels.

Each image should be labelled with the following information in mind: think the 5 "Ws"—"When", "Where", "What", "Who", and "Why". I will be grabbing the camera info and exposure settings from the metadata so you do not need to worry about that.

Please provide a written story of at least 250-270 words. This will use 1 page. If you wish to write more you will pay for additional pages. See layouts above). You may send the story as a text file or you can send it in an email directly to me.

I will be producing a 12"x12" square format book so the images are going to look gorgeous. We will print 4-colour throughout on a 100# coated matte stock. The cover will be a 12pt coated matt stock with a UV varnish finish.

The book will be perfect bound. Depending on the response to the project, I hope that the book will have a minimum of 100 pages.

How I Created This—Volume 1 received submissions from 31 photographers and ended up being 136 pages in length.
How I Created This—Volume 2 received images from 31 photographers and topped out at 142 pages.
How I Created This—Volume 3 received images from 25 photographers and topped out at 124 pages.

If each of you shares this link with 5 of your photo friends we will produce something quite extraordinary—remember, I am only looking for images that tell a story and/or provide a theme.

Let us work together to produce an amazing keepsake.

If you live outside the US you may also participate but realize that the shipping fees are quite heavy (around $42, including Canada. There is an option to select overseas shipping when you check out).

The choice for the Cover image will be decided by you. I will come up with a selection of images that I think will work. I will also put them up on social media and let the public chime in.

All images should be in by midnight on 13 DECEMBER, 2020

There is a minimum number of 4 pages for the Story Edition ($60). An extra 2 pages will be ($15) and a further 2 pages (max 8 pages) ($10) may be added… your choice!
You will receive a copy of the book on completion of the project

NB. Additional books will be available
    Shipping is extra.
