white-tailed sea eagle leaving the frame

I shot this white-tailed sea eagle from a tripod with a 600mm lens. Somtimes these birds are so quick that they fly out of the frame. In this case it did not leave the frame. I am posting the full frame image. I quite like the composition. Breaks a few rules. Thoughts?

red fox in winter coat

I am starting to go through images from my recent Japan trip. I quite like this one of a red fox we saw scavenging in a snow field. More to come.

ural owl at nest cavity

Today we stopped off at the nest site of a pair of Ural owls. This is one of the several Ural owl nests on the “owl circuit” in Hokkaido. Unfortunately the male was not there today. I was hoping for pictures of the pair at the cavity. The following images and video were shot with [...]

jal jushiro to tokyo

I was sitting in my window seat, camera in hand when this Japan Airways jet flew past. Is this photo about how small the plane is or how big the earth is – how insignificant we are?

alaskan sea ice from 37,000 ft

As I flew over the southwestern tip of Alaska today, on my way to Japan, the clouds broke and I was treated to wonderful views of the drifting ice pack. The patterns were stunning and seeing the world from 6 miles up makes you realize how beautiful and how fragile the planet is. I think [...]

viridiana chávez bautista

While we were on our recent photo tour to Oaxaca and Chiapas we met a local weaver, an inspiring young woman, Viridiana Chávez Bautista, who, along with her husband and other members of a co-op, produce beautiful woven rugs from natural materials. I would like to share a piece written by my friend and tour [...]

Well, I just got back from a great trip to Mexico. We had a nice small group and we statrted our tour in Oaxaca and hit a few of the local markets before heading down to Chiapas and the wonderful colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas. A trip to the Mayan ruins of [...]

stock ripoff

This rights-managed (Image Bank) image of mine of the Nashville skyline licensed by Getty Images recently sold for $0.11 to the MTV Network out of New York. I am happy to report that I made $0.04 on the deal. What has happened to the stock industry? How is it that a corporation like Getty Images [...]

street photos

The first two images were taken yesterday morning. It is amazing when you get these little “gifts”. I then stepped into the courtyard of a hotel and found this inner sanctuary. The skyline of San Miguel was shot from the terrace of a new Sicilian restaurant.

back in san miguel

Early morning saw us in the streets looking for interesting views. We also visited the home of artist Anado Mclauchlin finally finishing off the day at Boutique Hotel Owner Dianne Kusshner’s Casa Luna Ranch for photography and supper – lots of hdr images even though it was pretty windy.

urban spaces

There is nothing I like better on a trip than to head out into the streets before anyone is awake and photograph in the pre-dawn quiet, to capture the play of light between the street lanterns and the dawn glow. Then, as the sun comes up to watch the shadows play on the walls of [...]

fashion in san miguel

As I was wandering through the streets of San Miguel this evening, I came across this scene which really caught my eye. Turns out that it is the office of world class fashion designer Ramiro Oliva. He was kind enough to let me photograph this “street scene” and release its use. I particularly like the [...]

day of the dead images

This is an example of terrific community collaboration. This altar was built over a couple of days with help from students, friends and staff of the college and many of the items used in the altar were borrowed from local businesses. I would like to thank Sara Morillo and Arturo Morales Tirado staff at the [...]

It will be fun to roam the streets and find all of the different “offrendas” or alters which are being built to celebrate this important cultural event in Mexico. We [...]

under the tuscan sun – well most of the time

I just got back from 9 days in Tuscany with a small photo tour that I co-led with workshop diva Nancy Rotenberg organized through Strabo Tours. It was a great group and we had a lot of laughs and saw Tuscany with its fall coat on – it is one of those regions in the [...]

pic of the day

I am going through my old files and came across this picture which I quite like. As I recall it was a bit soft (in those days when Canon digital cameras wouldn’t focus worth a damn) so my agency did not take it.
