last day in japan
Early morning found us in the fishing port of Rausu. Due to unfavorable conditions we were not able to photograph Steller’s eagles so had to make do with sunrise in the harbor. We made a mad 100-mile dash back to the airport on narrow roads crammed with slow moving traffic, making it just in time [...]
downtown dallas arts district
After snow yesterday the weather progressed from a dull gray this morning to a clear night. I took advantage and made another panoramic of the on-going revitalization of the arts district. The structure in the foreground is the newly-completed, world-class Margot & Bill Winspear Opera House. The pictures that follow were taken a week or [...]
more urban spaces
Today we visited the capital and cultural center of the state of Guanajuato. What a view from the Pipila, one of the main overlooks above the city.
shoot locations
I will be shooting in Houston, New Orleans and Atlanta for a couple of weeks in August. Any suggestions for great city views? Hotels, public spaces, rooftop bars? If you give me a great location (different from the stuff that’s already been over/done) I will send you an 8×10 of the result. I am particularly [...]
pic of the day – free 8×10 if you id the city
This is a view captured on a rare, smog-free clear day. I will send the first person an 8×10 you can guess where it is. Post you answer in the Comments box. The image below is the same view shot at dusk. Good luck!

July 30, 2009 0We had a pretty wet and blustery day today here in Dallas so I took the opportunity to do some scouting for a shoot. Eventually, after visiting two buildings, I found the view that I REALLY liked and got permission to photograph the same evening as I suspected that it was going to clear up. [...]

revisiting the files
If, since the advent of digital photography, you have always shot RAW files as I have, now is the time to celebrate. I am starting to go back into my collection of images and create new, improved pictures using the technology we have at our disposal today. Adobe’s Camera RAW (ACR) has made quantum leaps [...]
fort worth skyline from north of town
Thanks to Tom Struhs and his partner Elizabeth Falconer for allowing me up into the penthouse of their luxurious development Villa de Leon just on the north side of Fort Worth. There is some construction debris and a tower crane to get rid of in some of the images, but I really like the shots, and [...]

fort worth sunrise
I dragged my self out of bed at 4:45 this morning to check the weather. I was due to be in nearby Fort Worth at 6:00 to shoot a backlit sunrise shot of the skyline. It was pretty cloudy but there were one or two small holes in the clouds so I decided to make [...]

June 26, 2009 1I spent yesterday evening updating images of the Fort Worth skyline. I hadn’t shot it since two tornados blew through in March of 2000. Almost 10 years on and Forth Worth has fixed up all the damage and it remains the friendly “living” city that it has always been. As I was leaving at around [...]
san diego skyline
Spent the day at La Jolla Beach near San Diego. Who wouldn’t want to live here? 68F during the day and 65F at night. I plan to be in Santa Monica on Wednesday to start my route 66 drive to Pasadena. I will then head south and drive back to Texas on I-10 through Phoenix. [...]
underlit clouds
It was not a really impressive sunset over San Diego last night, but 20 minutes or so after the sun had gone down the underside of clouds started to glow pink. I would have expected them to go completely pink. Interesting phenomenon!
